Context & Key Themes Psalm 80 is a communal lament structured around one of the most persistent and heartfelt prayers in all of scripture: Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved. It is repeated three times, at the beginning, middle, and end of the psalm — a refrain that…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 79 is a national lament written in the aftermath of catastrophe — almost certainly the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. The city is in ruins, the sanctuary defiled, the bodies of God’s servants left unburied for birds and beasts. The nations mock: where is their God? Asaph does…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 78 is the longest of Asaph’s psalms and one of the longest in the entire Psalter — seventy-two verses of Israel’s history told as a parable, a dark saying meant to instruct the next generation so they do not repeat the failures of the last. The pattern Asaph traces is…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 77 is the psalm of the long dark night that eventually becomes morning — but only after a genuine and sustained struggle to find God in the silence. Asaph cries out to God and is not comforted. He meditates and his spirit grows faint. He remembers God — and groans….
Context & Key Themes Psalm 76 is a victory hymn — a song of awe at the fearsome glory of a God who acts decisively in battle and silences the weapons of the proud. Asaph sings of God’s dwelling in Zion and the power that flows from that presence: arrows broken, shields shattered, horses and…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 75 is a short, precise psalm about divine justice, written by Asaph with three distinct voices woven together: the congregation giving thanks, God himself speaking in warning, and the psalmist adding his own testimony. The central claim of the psalm is that promotion and judgment do not come from human…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 74 is a national lament of devastating intensity. The sanctuary has been destroyed — enemies have broken in, hacked down its carved wood with axes and hammers, burned it to the ground. The signs of God’s presence have been replaced with the banners of the conquerors. Asaph writes from within…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 73 opens Book Three of the Psalter and does so with one of scripture’s most honest confessions: Asaph nearly lost his faith. Not to suffering, but to something arguably more corrosive — the prosperity of the wicked. He watched people who had no regard for God living without struggles, growing…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 72 closes Book Two of the Psalter and does so with extraordinary scope. Attributed to Solomon — or written by David for Solomon — it opens as a prayer for the reigning king but almost immediately transcends any particular monarch. The psalm’s vision of a king who defends the poor,…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 71 has no formal attribution, but its voice is unmistakably that of someone older — a person who has walked with God for many decades and is now facing the vulnerabilities of age while enemies circle, calculating that God has forsaken him. This is the psalm of the long life,…
