Context & Key Themes Psalm 60 is one of the most unusual psalms in the psalter in terms of its emotional arc. It was composed during a period of military crisis — the heading places it during David’s campaigns against Aram, when Joab returned from striking twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. Despite…

Context & Key Themes Psalm 59 was written during one of the most cinematically tense nights of David’s life. Saul had sent assassins to watch David’s house and kill him at dawn. His wife Michal helped him escape through a window (1 Samuel 19:11–16), and as he fled into the darkness, David wrote this psalm….

Context & Key Themes Psalm 58 is among the fiercest of the imprecatory psalms, and its target is specific: those in positions of judicial or ruling authority who have weaponized that authority against the innocent. David is not raging at a random enemy but at the corruption of institutions that exist to protect people and…

Context & Key Themes Psalm 57 was written from inside a cave. Not metaphorically — literally. David had fled from Saul and taken refuge in a cave at Engedi, and Saul himself came to the very mouth of that cave with three thousand men, not knowing David and his men were within. There was, in…

Context & Key Themes Psalm 56 was written in one of David’s most genuinely dangerous moments — the heading places it when the Philistines seized him in Gath, the very territory of Goliath, where David had fled from Saul. He had arrived alone, desperate, completely exposed among enemies who recognized him as the man who…

Context & Key Themes Psalm 55 is one of the most emotionally exposed psalms David ever wrote. The wound at its center is not the wound of an enemy’s attack — David could endure that, and says so plainly. The wound is the betrayal of a close companion, someone with whom he walked to the…

Context & Key Themes Psalm 54 is one of the shortest psalms in the psalter and one of the most economical — seven verses that move from urgent plea to confident praise with almost no wasted motion. The heading places it precisely: David composed it when the Ziphites went to Saul and betrayed his hiding…

Context & Key Themes Psalm 53 is, at first glance, almost identical to Psalm 14. Both open with the same devastating line about the fool who says in his heart there is no God, both survey the same landscape of universal corruption, both end with the same longing for Israel’s salvation. But they are not…

Context & Key Themes Psalm 52 was born from a specific act of treachery. The heading tells us David wrote it when Doeg the Edomite informed Saul that Ahimelech the priest had helped David — information Doeg then used to massacre eighty-five priests and their entire village. David had witnessed Doeg at the tabernacle and…
