Context & Key Themes Psalm 150 is the last psalm. It is also the shortest, the loudest, and in many ways the simplest — and that is exactly right. After 149 psalms of lament, confession, petition, thanksgiving, wisdom, history, and praise in every key and register, the Psalter ends not with a meditation but with…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 149 is the penultimate Hallelujah — the second to last, one step from the great finale — and it arrives with a striking combination of celebration and seriousness. The praise called for here is full-bodied: dancing, tambourine, lyre, singing for joy even on one’s bed. But alongside the dancing, the…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 148 is the most cosmically ambitious psalm in the Psalter. Where earlier psalms called on Israel, or Zion, or the nations to praise God, this one calls everything. It begins in the heavens — with angels, hosts, sun, moon, stars, the highest heavens, the waters above the heavens — and…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 147 is one of the most expansive psalms in the Psalter — expansive not in length alone but in the range of what it holds together. In the same breath it names God as the one who heals the brokenhearted and the one who counts the stars and calls each…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 146 opens the final five-psalm sequence that closes the entire Psalter, each beginning and ending with Hallelujah — Praise the Lord. These five psalms are not a gradual buildup so much as an eruption, one Hallelujah after another, widening in scope until the very last verse calls everything that has…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 145 is the last psalm explicitly attributed to David, and he constructed it as an acrostic — each verse beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, from aleph to taw. The form itself is a declaration: from the first letter to the last, from beginning to end, there…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 144 is a Davidic psalm that draws heavily from Psalm 18, weaving together royal praise, cosmic petition, and domestic blessing. It is at once a warrior’s thanksgiving and a meditation on human smallness before God — and it concludes with one of the most beautiful visions of peacetime flourishing in…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 143 is the last of the seven traditional penitential psalms and one of the most complete expressions of the soul’s posture before God in suffering: honest about its own unworthiness, desperate for God’s intervention, hungry for instruction, and finally surrendered to divine leading. It is a Davidic psalm that holds…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 142 is a Maskil of David — a teaching psalm — written when he was in the cave, almost certainly the cave of Adullam where he hid from Saul’s pursuit. It is one of the most nakedly desolate psalms in the collection, a cry from a man who is not…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 141 is a Davidic prayer of evening — a psalm of careful, interior discipline asked of God, as much about the dangers within as the dangers without. It begins with a beautiful image: let my prayer rise as incense, let the lifting of my hands be as the evening sacrifice….
