Context & Key Themes Psalm 100 is the crown of the enthronement cluster — five verses that do what thirty-five psalms have been building toward. After the thunder of God’s kingship, the trembling of the earth, the proclamation of his holiness, this psalm simply opens the gates and invites everyone in. Every verb is active,…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 99 closes the enthronement cluster — the sequence of psalms from 93 through 99 that thunder one sustained declaration: the Lord reigns. But where the earlier psalms in that group shook the heavens and seas with cosmic force, Psalm 99 brings the trembling inward. This is not a psalm of…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 98 is another new song — and like Psalm 96 it is addressed not just to Israel but to the whole earth and to creation itself. The marvelous things God has done, the salvation his right hand has worked, his righteousness revealed before all nations — these call for a…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 97 is the most apocalyptic of the enthronement psalms — full of fire, lightning, melting mountains, and the earth shaking. It declares the Lord’s reign not in quiet confidence but in terrifying cosmic display. The clouds and thick darkness surround him. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries….
Context & Key Themes Psalm 96 is a global anthem of praise — not a private song or a national hymn but an invitation addressed to the whole earth, to all the nations, to the heavens themselves. It calls for a new song, declares God’s glory among the peoples, and announces his coming to judge…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 95 is a liturgical call to worship with a prophetic edge built into it. The first half is pure invitation — come, let us sing, let us shout for joy, let us make a joyful noise, let us come into his presence with thanksgiving. The second half is a warning…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 94 interrupts the enthronement cluster with a jolt of honest protest. Surrounded by psalms declaring the Lord reigns, Psalm 94 asks why it does not look that way. The wicked are crushing the humble, murdering the widow and the stranger, killing the fatherless, and saying God does not see. This…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 93 is brief, concentrated, and entirely devoted to one declaration: the Lord reigns. Five verses, no narrative, no petition, no lament. Just the thunderous affirmation that God is king — robed in majesty, girded with strength, enthroned from everlasting, mightier than the raging seas. This psalm opens the cluster of…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 92 is the only psalm in the Psalter explicitly titled for a specific day — it is a song for the Sabbath. It opens by declaring it good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to his name, to declare his steadfast love in the morning and his…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 91 is one of the most beloved and most misused psalms in all of scripture. It speaks of protection so comprehensive and so vivid — a thousand falling at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but not touching you — that it has been embraced as a…
