Context & Key Themes Psalm 70 is brief — five verses — and it does not waste a single one. It is nearly identical to the closing section of Psalm 40, adapted here as a standalone urgent plea. David is in danger, and he comes to God with the one request he cannot negotiate on:…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 69 is one of the most intensely personal laments David ever wrote, and simultaneously one of the most prophetically rich psalms in the entire collection. The New Testament quotes it more than almost any other psalm — applied to Christ’s zeal for the temple, to the gall given at the…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 68 is one of the most theologically dense and structurally complex psalms in the entire Psalter — a sweeping processional hymn that moves from the wilderness wanderings all the way through Israel’s history to the final universal exaltation of God over all nations. Attributed to David, it opens with the…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 67 is among the shortest psalms in the psalter and among the most expansive in vision. Seven verses. The scope: all the earth, all the nations, all the peoples, the ends of the earth. It opens with the Aaronic blessing from Numbers 6 — may God be gracious to us,…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 66 is a testimony psalm built on three expanding circles: the praise of all the earth, the shared experience of God’s people through history, and one individual’s personal account of deliverance. The movement is deliberate and theologically significant — the psalmist situates his own story within the larger story of…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 65 is a psalm of abundance in every direction — abundance of praise, abundance of forgiveness, abundance of provision, abundance of harvest. It moves through three distinct movements: the worship life of Zion, the sovereign power of God over creation, and the lavish generosity of God toward the earth. Most…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 64 is a focused psalm about a specific and recurring threat: the hidden malice of those who attack not with physical weapons but with carefully sharpened words. The enemies David describes are not charging openly. They are plotting in secret, laying snares in darkness, whispering among themselves in confidence that…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 63 is one of the most purely devotional psalms David ever wrote — not a lament, not an imprecation, not a battle cry, but a love song addressed to God from the middle of a desert. The heading places it in the wilderness of Judah, likely during Absalom’s rebellion when…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 62 is one of the stillest psalms in the entire psalter — and stillness, in this context, is not absence of threat but the active, deliberate posture of a soul that has decided where it stands. David is under attack. Enemies are plotting to thrust him down from his position,…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 61 is a psalm of nearness sought from a place of distance. David writes from what he calls “the end of the earth” — likely during the exile of Absalom’s rebellion, when he was driven from Jerusalem to the far side of the Jordan. He is geographically remote from the…
