Context & Key Themes Psalm 40 is one of the great psalms of testimony — but it is a testimony with a twist. David opens looking backward at what God has already done, praising Him for a deliverance already accomplished, and then turns midway through the same psalm to face a new crisis and cry…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 39 is a psalm of restrained anguish — a man trying very hard to hold something inside, failing, and then turning the whole burning weight of it toward God. David begins with a resolution of silence. There are wicked people present and he doesn’t trust what might come out of…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 38 is one of the seven penitential psalms of scripture, a list that includes Psalms 6, 32, 51, 102, 130, and 143. These are the psalms of the truly broken — not the merely sad, but the soul that has grasped the connection between its own sin and its own…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 37 is David’s great wisdom psalm on one of the most persistent and unsettling human experiences: watching the wicked prosper. Like Proverbs, it unfolds as an extended meditation rather than a prayer or a lament — it is teaching, counsel, the seasoned instruction of an old man who has seen…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 36 is structured as a stark diptych — four verses describing the anatomy of wickedness, followed by eight verses describing the character of God, and closing with a brief but piercing prayer. The contrast is not accidental. By placing the portrait of the wicked immediately before the portrait of God’s…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 35 is one of the sharpest and most unguarded cries for divine justice in the entire psalter. David is not merely under attack — he has been betrayed by people he showed kindness to, maligned by false witnesses, and mocked by those who once accepted his care in their own…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 34 is a psalm born from one of David’s most undignified moments. The heading tells us he composed it after pretending madness before Abimelech, king of Gath — drooling, scratching at gates, performing insanity so convincingly that the king threw him out rather than kill him. David escaped because he…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 33 is a hymn of pure, unattributed praise — no heading names an author, no personal crisis drives it. It rises from the final note of Psalm 32 (where the upright are told to shout for joy) and expands that call into a full theological declaration about the character of…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 32 is a psalm of relief — the specific relief of a man who has been carrying something crushing and finally put it down. David opens with what amounts to a declaration of blessedness for the forgiven, then walks us backward through the agony that preceded that forgiveness: the silence,…
Context & Key Themes Psalm 31 is a psalm of radical trust forged in the middle of real danger. David is surrounded — by enemies, by betrayal, by the whispers of those who want him dead — and his response is not flight or bravado but a deliberate surrender of himself into the hands of…
