Psalm 97 is the most apocalyptic of the enthronement psalms — full of fire, lightning, melting mountains, and the earth shaking. It declares the Lord’s reign not in quiet confidence but in terrifying cosmic display. The clouds and thick darkness surround him. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries. His lightnings light the world; the earth sees and trembles. Yet alongside this fearsome display is a tender note: the Lord loves those who hate evil; he guards the lives of his saints; light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. The same fire that consumes the wicked is the fire that brightens the path of those who belong to God.

Reflection
The closing image of Psalm 97 — light sown for the righteous like seed in the ground — is one of the Psalter’s most unusual and hopeful metaphors. Light is not simply present; it is planted. It is working underground, in the dark, growing toward a harvest that has not yet arrived. That is a different picture of righteousness than the one of immediate vindication. It is the picture of a person whose faithfulness is being accumulated, stored, developing beneath the surface — not yet visible in full, but real and growing toward its full expression.
Psalm 97 holds that tender promise inside some of the most terrifying divine imagery in the entire Psalter. Fire and lightning and melting mountains — and then: light sown for the righteous. The same God. The same day. That is the psalm’s gift: the reminder that the fearsome sovereignty that causes the earth to tremble is on the side of those who love him, guarding their lives, planting their light, and bending toward their joy.
