What Is Eschatology?
Eschatology is the branch of theology concerned with final things — the end of this age, the judgment of souls, the return of Christ, and the eternal destiny of every human being who has ever lived. The word comes from the Greek eschatos, meaning last, and logos, meaning word or study. In the simplest terms: it is the study of what comes next.
According to Scripture, humanity as we know it will not continue indefinitely. This age will end. Every soul will face judgment. And the outcome of that judgment is not a matter of degrees — it is one of two destinations, with nothing in between. Every soul will become either more than human, redeemed and glorified in the presence of God, or permanently cut off from everything that is good, holy, and alive.
This is not theory. It is not mythology dressed in religious language. It is the consistent testimony of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation, and it deserves to be taken seriously.
Why This Section Exists
This section of The Narrow Gate is dedicated to examining the prophetic timeline revealed in Scripture, alongside the visions, writings, and interpretations from the past two thousand years that bear on the end of days. The goal is not to instill fear. The Bible does not conceal the truth about the end — it reveals it, specifically so that those with ears to hear can understand what is coming and prepare accordingly.
We are living in what Scripture calls the Age of Grace, or the Church Age — the period between Christ’s first coming and His return. That age is drawing toward its close. Understanding the prophetic timeline does not make a believer anxious — it makes them attentive, and ultimately it makes them hopeful. The same Lord who told His disciples what was coming also told them: “See, I have told you beforehand.” (Matthew 24:25)
He told us so that we would not be caught off guard. And so that we would look up.
Two Final Outcomes
Every soul will face one of two eternal destinations. This is not a comfortable thing to say, but it is an honest one, and the people who come to this section deserve honesty more than comfort.
Eternity without God awaits those who reject Christ — through active rebellion, through unbelief, or through the substitution of religious performance for genuine faith. Their judgment will take place at the Great White Throne (Revelation 20:11-15), where they will be judged by their works under the Law, having never been covered by the grace and righteousness of Christ. No amount of moral effort, spiritual sincerity, or religious observance changes the verdict. Scripture is without ambiguity on this point: there is none righteous, not even one (Romans 3:10), and all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Those judged by their works will be found guilty. The Lake of Fire — described as eternal separation from everything good and holy — is the outcome Scripture describes, and the warnings are sufficient. We are meant to understand the weight of the choice before us.
Eternity with God awaits those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, placing their faith in His finished work on the cross. They are not judged by the Law but are justified by grace (Romans 5:1, Ephesians 2:8-9). Through repentance and new birth in Christ, they are sealed by the Holy Spirit and will never face eternal condemnation (Romans 8:1). The path to that eternity unfolds differently depending on timing:
Those who die before the rapture go immediately to be with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). Those alive at the rapture are transformed and taken directly into heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). Those who come to faith during the tribulation and die for it will be raised and reign with Christ in the Millennial Kingdom (Revelation 20:4-6). Those who survive the tribulation having rejected Christ face judgment at His return (Revelation 19:15). Those who survive and come to faith during the tribulation will enter the Millennial Kingdom alive.
The Day of the Lord and the End of This Age
After one thousand years of Christ’s reign on earth, Satan will be released for a final, brief season to deceive the nations once more (Revelation 20:7-9). He will be defeated permanently. Then comes the final judgment, and after it, the complete renewal of all things. Heaven and earth as we know them will be destroyed and remade (2 Peter 3:10-13, Revelation 21:1). All things will be made new. The story does not end in darkness. It ends in a light that has no evening.
The Purpose of This Section
This section exists to educate those seeking truth about the end times, to clarify prophetic teachings that have been confused or misused, and to encourage believers with the genuine hope of Christ’s return. The goal is not fear but understanding. Not panic but preparation. Not anxiety but the kind of joyful attentiveness that comes from knowing the end of the story and living in light of it.
