This is the first time Jesus sends His disciples out to minister without Him physically present. Itâs both a commissioning and a warning: preaching the Kingdom will bring persecution. Thereâs no prosperity gospel hereâonly truth, courage, and eternal reward.
âď¸ The Twelve Are Sent (Verses 1â4)
âAnd he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.â âMatthew 10:1
Jesus gives delegated authority to the Twelve. Theyâre named one by oneâmen with flaws, fears, and familiesâbut chosen to carry divine power.
This list even includes Judas Iscariot, a reminder that not everyone who serves will remain faithful.
đ Their Mission Instructions (Verses 5â15)
Jesus sends them only to the lost sheep of Israelânot because He doesn’t love the Gentiles, but because the message must first go to the covenant people.
Their task?
- Heal the sick
- Raise the dead
- Cleanse lepers
- Cast out demons
And their method?
âYou received without paying; give without pay.â âMatthew 10:8
They were to travel lightâno money, no extra tunic. God would provide. If a town rejected them?
âShake off the dust from your feetâŚâ âMatthew 10:14
This act symbolized leaving their judgment with God. The Gospel is a giftâbut also a dividing line.
âď¸ Persecution Is Coming (Verses 16â25)
Jesus doesnât sugarcoat it:
âBehold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolvesâŚâ âMatthew 10:16
They would be handed over to councils, flogged, hated by all for His nameâs sake. Families would betray each other. The worldâs hatred is the shadow cast by His light.
But He also gives assurance:
âDo not be anxious how you are to speakâŚfor it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.â âMatthew 10:19â20
God never sends you alone.
đď¸ Do Not FearâYou Are Known (Verses 26â33)
Jesus repeats it three times:
âDo not fear.â
Why? Because:
- Truth will be revealed
- Your soul matters more than your body
- You are deeply known by God
âEven the hairs of your head are all numbered.â âMatthew 10:30
âSo everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heavenâŚâ âMatthew 10:32
The stakes are eternal. Boldness here echoes in Heaven.
âď¸ Jesus Brings a Sword, Not Peace (Verses 34â39)
âDo not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.â âMatthew 10:34
This isnât about physical violenceâitâs about the dividing effect of truth. Loyalty to Jesus will cause conflict, even within families. Thereâs no neutral ground.
âWhoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.â âMatthew 10:39
This is one of Jesusâ most radical teachings: true life only comes through surrender.
đ The Reward of Receiving His People (Verses 40â42)
Jesus closes with hope:
âWhoever receives you receives meâŚâ âMatthew 10:40
âAnd whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold waterâŚwill by no means lose his reward.â âMatthew 10:42
Even the smallest act of support for His messengers is eternally significant.
⨠Reflection
Matthew 10 isnât a soft callingâitâs a battle cry. But it’s not just for the Twelve. Itâs for anyone willing to follow Jesus wherever He leads, knowing the path may lead through rejection, pain, or even deathâbut it also leads to glory.
This world will oppose truth. But the King who sends us is greater than the wolves we face.
Will you go out, unarmed but unstoppable, carrying nothing but truth, healing, and the name of Jesus?
