Introduction
Zechariah is one of the longest and most theologically rich of the Minor Prophets β fourteen chapters that span from the practical encouragement of temple builders in 520 BC to some of the most precisely fulfilled messianic prophecies in all of Scripture. His name means “the Lord remembers,” and the book is an extended demonstration of exactly that: God has not forgotten his people, his city, his promises, or his ultimate purpose for history.
The book divides naturally into two parts. Chapters 1β8 are anchored in the post-exilic moment β eight dramatic night visions, a call to repentance, the crowning of Joshua as a type of the Branch, and ten cascading promises of Jerusalem’s complete restoration. Chapters 9β14 are two undated oracles that reach far beyond the immediate moment into the full sweep of messianic history β the king riding on a donkey, the thirty pieces of silver, the pierced one, the shepherd struck and the sheep scattered, the fountain opened for cleansing, and the final day when the Lord’s feet stand on the Mount of Olives and every pot in Jerusalem is holy.
“And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.”
β Zechariah 14:9
Zechariah is a book for people building something that feels too small, in a season that feels too obscure, toward a promise that feels too far away. It is also a book that reaches into the future with a precision that only a God who stands outside time could achieve. Read it slowly. It rewards patience.
