Context & Key Themes Chapter 21 is the consummation of the entire Bible. Everything that began in Genesis 1–2 — the heavens and the earth, the dwelling of God with humanity, the river, the tree of life, the marriage of the man and the woman — reaches its fulfillment here in expanded and glorified form….
Context & Key Themes Chapter 20 contains some of the most discussed passages in all of Christian theology, and it deserves to be read with both confidence in what the text says and humility about what it does not settle. The dragon — the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan — is bound and thrown into…
Context & Key Themes Chapter 19 is the triumphant turn of the entire book — the moment the long arc from judgment to consummation reaches its hinge. Heaven erupts in fourfold hallelujah over the fall of Babylon. The wedding supper of the Lamb is announced and the Bride is presented in fine linen, bright and…
Context & Key Themes Chapter 18 is the funeral of Babylon, written almost entirely in the language of Old Testament laments over the fall of imperial cities — Isaiah’s oracle against Babylon, Jeremiah’s extended prophecy of Babylon’s fall, and Ezekiel’s lament over Tyre. The chapter unfolds in distinct movements: an angel descends from heaven with…
Context & Key Themes Chapter 17 is the extended unveiling of Babylon the great, named explicitly at the close of the seventh bowl. One of the seven angels who had the bowls invites John to come and see the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters. The vision that follows is…
Context & Key Themes The seven bowls are poured out in rapid succession, completing the cycle of judgment that the seals began and the trumpets intensified. Where the trumpets struck a third of creation, the bowls strike in full — painful sores on those who bore the mark of the beast, the sea becoming blood,…
Context & Key Themes Chapter 15 is short and almost entirely preparatory. It is the threshold of the third and final cycle of seven — after the seven seals and the seven trumpets, now come the seven bowls of the wrath of God, in which God’s wrath is finished. But before the bowls are poured…
Context & Key Themes After two chapters dominated by the dragon and his beasts, chapter 14 opens with one of the most striking contrasts in the entire book: the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, with the 144,000 sealed ones from chapter 7 standing with Him, His Father’s name and His own name written on their…
Context & Key Themes Chapter 13 follows directly from the close of chapter 12, where the dragon stood on the sand of the sea preparing to make war on the rest of the woman’s offspring. Here the dragon’s war takes visible form through two beasts — the first rising from the sea and the second…
Context & Key Themes Chapter 12 is the theological backstory of the entire book. Having reached the climax of the trumpet sequence in chapter 11 with the announcement that the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord, John now pulls back to show what has actually been happening underneath visible history…
