Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel ends not with triumph but with grief. The Philistines fight Israel on Mount Gilboa. Jonathan dies. Saul’s sons die. Saul himself, mortally wounded, asks his armor-bearer to run him through so he will not be mocked by the uncircumcised. The armor-bearer refuses out of fear. Saul falls on his…
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 30 is the chapter of David’s lowest personal moment and his most decisive act of leadership. He returns to Ziklag to find it burned and every woman and child taken — including his own two wives. His men weep until they have no more strength to weep. Then they…
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 29 is the chapter where God’s providence protects David from a catastrophic moral problem without David having to solve it himself. The Philistines are mustering to fight Israel. David and his men are marching with Achish — technically vassals of the enemy, prepared to fight against their own people….
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 28 is one of the most theologically unsettling chapters in the Old Testament, and it has generated centuries of debate. Saul, cut off from God — no dreams, no Urim, no prophets — disguises himself and goes to a medium at Endor to call up the spirit of Samuel….
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 27 is the chapter where David’s faith falters in the most practical sense. After two acts of extraordinary principled restraint, he says to himself: I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing left to do but escape to the Philistines. He goes to…
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 26 is the second time David refuses to kill Saul, and the repetition is deliberate. The situation is almost identical to chapter 24 — David has Saul at his mercy in the night, Abishai is urging him to act, one thrust of the spear would end it. David refuses…
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 25 opens with the death of Samuel and pivots immediately to a story that functions as a character test for David at a moment of maximum provocation. Nabal is rich, churlish, and insulting. Abigail is wise, beautiful, and decisive. David is furious and on his way to kill every…
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 24 is the cave chapter — one of the most theologically concentrated scenes in David’s entire story. Saul walks into the cave where David and his men are hiding, alone and vulnerable, to relieve himself. David’s men immediately read it as divine providence: the Lord has given your enemy…
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 23 is a chapter of constant movement and constant inquiry. David is never still and never acts without asking God first. He hears that the Philistines are attacking Keilah, asks the Lord, gets an answer, his men push back in fear, he asks again, gets the same answer, and…
Context & Key Themes 1 Samuel 22 runs two stories in parallel, and the contrast between them is almost unbearable to read. In one story, David gathers around him the broken and the desperate at the cave of Adullam and begins to become a leader of a different kind — the kind who creates a…
