Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 22 is the death of Ahab, and it arrives exactly as Elijah prophesied and exactly as the lying spirit in the heavenly council was commissioned to arrange. Ahab and Jehoshaphat king of Judah plan to retake Ramoth-gilead from Syria. Jehoshaphat wants to inquire of the Lord first. Four hundred…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 21 is Ahab at his most nakedly corrupt and Elijah at his most thunderous. Naboth has a vineyard beside the palace in Jezreel. Ahab wants it for a vegetable garden. He offers to buy it or trade for a better one. Naboth refuses: the Lord forbid that I should…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 20 is a chapter that surprises — Ahab, the worst king in Israel’s history to this point, receives military deliverance from the Lord not once but twice against the Syrians under Ben-hadad. God is not rescuing Ahab because of Ahab’s righteousness. He is defending Israel’s honor and demonstrating his…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 19 is the chapter immediately after the fire, and it is one of the most humanly honest passages in all of the prophetic literature. Jezebel sends a messenger to Elijah: by tomorrow you will be dead like the prophets of Baal. Elijah, who just called down fire from heaven…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 18 is one of the most dramatic chapters in all of scripture and one of the most theologically precise. After three years of drought, Elijah is sent back to Ahab. What follows is the confrontation on Mount Carmel — Elijah alone against four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal,…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 17 is the first appearance of Elijah the Tishbite, and he enters without introduction or backstory — simply arriving before Ahab with a word: there will be no rain except by my word. Then he disappears into the wilderness, sustained by ravens and a brook, and then into a…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 16 is a chapter of relentless succession — one king after another in the northern kingdom, most of them assassinated by the man who replaces them, each one described as doing evil in the sight of the Lord and walking in the sins of Jeroboam. The chapter moves through…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 15 is a rapid succession of kings in both kingdoms, and the contrast the chapter draws is between Asa of Judah — who does what is right in the sight of the Lord, though the high places remain — and the continuing corruption of the northern kingdom where one…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 14 runs two lines of judgment in parallel: the doom of Jeroboam’s house in the north, and the decline of Rehoboam’s reign in the south. Both dynasties are failing simultaneously, though in different ways. Jeroboam’s sick son becomes the occasion for a devastating prophetic word from Ahijah, the same…
Context & Key Themes 1 Kings 13 is one of the strangest and most theologically precise chapters in the entire book. A nameless man of God comes from Judah to Bethel, delivers a stunning prophetic sign against Jeroboam’s altar, and then is killed on the road home — not by Jeroboam’s soldiers but by a…
