Introduction
Micah was a prophet from Moresheth, a small town in the rural lowlands of Judah, a contemporary of Isaiah and Hosea, ministering during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Unlike Isaiah who moved in the corridors of power in Jerusalem, Micah came from the countryside — and it shows in his writing. He saw the suffering of ordinary people with uncommon clarity: the land being seized by the powerful, the poor crushed by corruption, leaders who should protect turning into predators. His indictments are specific and his grief is personal.
The book moves in three cycles, each one alternating between judgment and hope. Samaria will fall. Jerusalem will fall. The leaders, priests, and prophets who exploit God’s people will be held to account. And yet — threading through every dark oracle — the promises accumulate: a remnant will be gathered, a shepherd-king will come from Bethlehem, swords will be beaten into ploughshares, and God will pardon iniquity and delight in steadfast love. The book reaches its apex in one of the most quoted and most demanding verses in all of scripture — a three-word summary of what God actually requires of his people.

Micah is a book that refuses easy comfort. It names the sins of God’s people with surgical precision and holds out the mercy of God with equal clarity. Both are true at the same time. Both matter.
