Written by Joshua son of Nun (with the account of his death added by a later editor)
Introduction
Joshua is the book of entering in. Moses has died on Mount Nebo, buried by the Lord in a valley in Moab whose location no one knows. The wilderness wandering is over. The generation that refused to enter the land has died in the desert exactly as the Lord said they would. And now a new generation stands on the east bank of the Jordan River under a new leader β Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ servant, one of only two men from the original generation left alive because he and Caleb believed when the other ten spies did not. God speaks to him in the opening verses of the book: be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. The river is in front of him. Forty years of promise are behind him. It is time to cross.
The first half of the book is conquest. The Jordan parts as the Red Sea did a generation earlier and Israel crosses on dry ground. Jericho falls without a battle when the priests blow the trumpets and the people shout. Ai is taken β after a painful lesson in what happens when one man takes devoted things and hides them in his tent. The Gibeonites deceive Israel into a treaty, and Joshua keeps it anyway because it was sworn in the name of the Lord. Five Amorite kings are defeated in a single day when the sun stands still over the Valley of Aijalon. The northern coalition under Jabin of Hazor is broken at the waters of Merom. By chapter 12, thirty-one kings lie defeated and the land is subdued. The second half of the book is inheritance β the long, careful distribution of the land tribe by tribe, boundary by boundary, city by city. Caleb receives Hebron at eighty-five and drives out the giants. The daughters of Zelophehad claim the inheritance their father had no sons to receive. The cities of refuge are designated. The Levites are distributed throughout all the tribes. And Joshua, who oversaw every other tribe’s allotment, takes his own inheritance last β a single town in the hill country of Ephraim, which he rebuilds with his own hands and settles.
“Choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” β Joshua 24:15
The book closes with Joshua, old and full of years, gathering the tribes at Shechem for one final covenant renewal. He rehearses the whole story β how God took Abraham from beyond the River, how He brought Israel out of Egypt, how He gave them a land they did not till and cities they did not build. And then he puts the question to them plainly: choose this day whom you will serve. The people answer that they will serve the Lord, and Joshua warns them that saying so is not the same as doing so. He sets up a great stone under the oak at Shechem as a witness against them. Then he dies at one hundred and ten, buried in the land of his own inheritance, and the text tells us that Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and the elders who outlived him. What comes after that β when that generation too has died and the ones who do not remember the crossing of the Jordan come of age β is the story of Judges. But Joshua ends with the promise kept. Not one word of all the good things the Lord had spoken to Israel had failed. All came to pass.
