Introduction
Amos was not a prophet by training or by priestly lineage. He was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamore-fig trees from Tekoa, a small village in Judah — and yet the Lord pulled him from his flock and sent him north to Israel with one of the most searingly honest messages in all of scripture. He arrived during a season of material prosperity and political confidence under Jeroboam II, when Israel felt secure and spiritually smug. What Amos carried in his mouth was not comfort — it was the roar of the Lord from Zion.
The book opens with a series of judgments against Israel’s neighbors — Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, Moab, even Judah — each one landing like a hammer blow. Then comes the turn: Israel herself is the final target, and the indictment is the heaviest of all. The nation had received more from God, and so bore greater accountability. Religious observance without social justice was, Amos declared, not worship — it was noise God despised. The Day of the Lord they longed for would not be deliverance for an unrepentant people; it would be darkness. And yet the book does not end in ash. A remnant would survive the sieve. The fallen booth of David would be raised. Hope waits at the far end of judgment.
