Written by Paul the Apostle
Introduction
This is the last letter Paul ever wrote. He writes from a cold Roman cell, chained as a criminal, knowing the executioner is near. The voice that comes off the page is unguarded in a way the earlier letters are not โ affectionate, urgent, occasionally lonely, but burning all the way through with the conviction that the gospel he has spent his life preaching is true and worth dying for.
Timothy is the addressee, but the audience is wider. Paul writes as a man passing the torch. He recalls Timothy’s faith, passed down through his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice. He urges him to fan into flame the gift of God, to not be ashamed of the testimony of Christ, to share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God. The letter alternates between deeply personal moments โ names of those who have abandoned Paul, names of those who have stood by him, requests for a cloak and parchments before winter โ and some of the most quoted exhortations in the New Testament: all Scripture is breathed out by God; preach the word, in season and out of season; I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
The four chapters are short but weighted. They cover courage in the face of opposition, the metaphor of the soldier, athlete, and farmer for those who labor in the gospel, the description of perilous times in the last days, and Paul’s own farewell as he approaches what he calls the time of his departure. The pacing tightens as the letter nears its end. By the final chapter Paul is naming the people he has loved and lost, the people he hopes will come, the One who stood by him when no one else did, and the crown of righteousness laid up not only for him but for all who have loved Christ’s appearing.
For everyone who reads it, 2 Timothy is the New Testament’s clearest portrait of a faithful man at the finish line. The torch he is handing forward is the same torch we all carry now, and the charge he leaves is the charge that still falls to every generation: guard the deposit, fight the good fight, finish the race.
