Written by the Apostle Paul
Introduction
1 Thessalonians is the earliest letter Paul ever wrote โ likely composed around AD 50, just months after he, Silas, and Timothy planted this little church in the Macedonian capital and were chased out of town by an angry mob. He couldn’t stop thinking about them. He worried about them under persecution, wondered if their faith would hold, sent Timothy back to check on them, and when Timothy returned with good news, Paul sat down and wrote this letter. It is, more than any of his others, a love letter โ to a church that got it, that lived it, that became the kind of believers other churches looked at and said, “we want to be like that.”
The themes are simple and immense: faith, love, and hope โ what Paul calls the trio that defines authentic Christian life. He celebrates how the Thessalonians turned from idols to serve the living God, holds them up as a model for all the surrounding regions, instructs them on holy living and brotherly love, and then turns to the question that was clearly burning in their hearts: what about those who have died before Christ returns? Paul’s answer in chapter 4 โ that the dead in Christ will rise first, and we who remain will be caught up together with them โ is one of the most comforting passages in the entire New Testament, written specifically to a grieving people who needed to know that death does not have the final word.
Above all, this letter teaches us how to wait. The Thessalonians were waiting eagerly for the return of Jesus, and Paul does not dampen their expectation โ he sharpens it. But he also corrects it. Waiting for Christ is not passive idleness or feverish date-setting; it is active faithfulness โ working with our hands, loving one another, encouraging the discouraged, holding fast to what is good, rejoicing always, praying without ceasing, giving thanks in everything. The Thessalonians waited well because they lived well. May we read this letter and learn the same posture โ eyes lifted, hands working, hearts full, prepared at any moment to greet the returning King.
